Trail magazine launched the Homemade Mountain Movie Award earlier this year to find the best amateur hill-walking film talent in the UK.
With almost 100 entries it’s been hard work to narrow down the entrants to just five finalists… but here they are...
Film title: Wild Camp
Film maker: Terry Abraham
Terry says: “After studying a map, I did a brief recce of an area within the Lake District I thought would make a great location. I planned in my mind what shots and angles I wanted, but in the end I just went with the flow. The weather was a particular problem and can be very frustrating, so I had to be patient to capture the video I wanted. But after all the climbing, repacking gear and sitting around, I had hours of footage to view.”
Trail says: “Terry has a real eye for atmospheric shots that take you deep into the moment and drop you right onto the hill. He’s a regular contributor to LFTO, and definitely one to watch.”
Film title: 40 Years on the Scottish Hills
Film maker: James Hughes
James says: “I was always keen to make a film about my dad and his relationship with the Scottish hills. I recall watching Super 8mm footage of his hill-walking trips when I was a boy and thought it would be great to edit the images into a short film. It was great to interview my dad, getting a feeling of the camaraderie between his friends on and off the hills. Trying to make the film under 3 minutes was a challenge as we had lots of footage and it was tough to edit . I really wanted to capture how the hills can have an effect on one’s life. Be it friendship or a sense of peace, there is something there that people have in common and can enjoy.”
Trail says: “A beautifully crafted and very well-focused bit of film-making that definitely taps in to the impact that the hills can have on a walker’s life.”

RE: Homemade Mountain Movie Award Finalists Announced!
All good entries, and worth finalists. My two faves are Terry's for his camera shots and how it feels as if you're there with him sharing that brew. Well done Terry - Brilliant as always. My other vote would go to Tom Reader. Loved that and had a lump in my throat when I thought he wasnt going to make it. Felt his joy when he made it to the summit. Good luck to both of you. x

When I got high by Tom Reader is my fav - created a real feeling of a journey, new discoveries on the way, a love of nature and then the full emotion of achieving the ultimate goal - I enjoyed sharing his journey with him. If he ends up filming at Base Camp Everest I will enjoy watching - plus great choice of music.

What an enjoyable quarter hour's watching. All fascinating, and great to see people with cameras capturing the essence of the outdoors. For me, Tom Reader's stood out. I thought nice crisp footage, superbly edited with the sound track, taking the viewer through a great experience.

Have I? Which entries have I appeared in for this comp? You going to suggest the same to other forum members who have appeared in Terry's videos? You may think I'm not being objective...fact of the matter is, it's my own personal opinion. And what is in no doubt is the way he frames a shot with the lighting and composition in his entry above is way and above anyone elses entry. James Hughes gets it spot on, too to be honest. Very professional. Am I being unfair saying that? Think what you like my friend but each to their own. I know I'm not the only one who likes his and others videos for the same reasons. So, norley? You came on here via the KMFF site? Registered and only 2 posts? Hmmmmm......don't understand why you'd want to be so silly as to suggest and mock my opinion. That my friend is not fair at all. We'll agree to disagree perhaps?

Hey, Captain Caveman, having appeared in some of Terry's films perhaps you're not totally objective. If he wins, will you be joining him on the Himalayan trip?
